Octavian was only 19 when Julius Caesar died, Julius treated him as if he were his son, though they were technically not related by blood at all. When Julius died, Octavius immediately went to Rome to claim the throne as Julius' heir. Mark Antony was his rival for the throne and all the power that comes with it, the two fought for about year, then joined together to chased down Julius' murders. After the battle of was won they split the kingdom into two parts, and it was agreed that Antony would rule the eastern province, and Octavius would rule the west.For the following years they worked together until Antony went to live with Cleopatra and after defeating the armies of Antony in the battle of Battle of Actium also known as Final War of the Roman Republic. Octavius then took over the entire Empire and ruled for many years, many says he was one of the best emperor who ever ruled.
The Battle of Actium was full of blood shed, the naval battle occurred in the Ionian sea near the small city of Actium. The battle between Octavius, Mark Antony, and Mark Antony's lover Cleopatra. The battle was not long and only lasted a mere afternoon. But this battle was significant because it gave Octavius the right to take the throne and the riches and powers that come with the title emperor. For about For the first ten years or so of his rule he was busy fighting civil wars, and the following forty years were the longest period of peace in roman history and also, was known for its great prosperity. And after this battle he then had his name changed to Augustus Caesar.
Octavius is well known for his works with in the Government, First he closed the Gates of Janus which symbolized peace, which was the first time in many years. Once he closed the doors he then began to focus much of his attention on administrative which in this time were crucial, Rome in the past years began to fall in the economic strength, but Octavius saw this and noticed how it affected its people and did his best to establish a stable government. Many of his ideas to reform the government came from Julius Caesar. He imputed equitable taxes and regular censuses to help the status of how plebeians live. Not only did Octavius believe in helping his people but also he believed in the ideals of superior roman civilization. During his long reign he proceeding in building the Temple of Caesar. This was dedicated to his adoptive father Julius Caesar.
Julius Died in 23 B.C. from illness, which brought the question of who will be brought to the throne as his rightful heir many thought his sister's son, Marcellus would fill the throne to the likeness of Rome.
